Badminton's Basic Rules

Badminton rules are different from one game to the next and match to match. The Badminton World Federation (BWF) rules outline the basic facets of the sport. These rules also define specific skills and shots. There are several rules that govern how the shuttlecock is used and served. To win a badminton match, it is important to understand these rules.

The most important shot of a badminton rally is the service. This is a shot that can only be hit once, and will result in a point for the receiver. This right is earned by the receiver winning a rally in official BWF play.

There are many service rules depending on what game you're playing. Most importantly, you can't serve overhead or touch it with your body. You cannot serve diagonally across a net. Another rule is that you can't hit the shuttlecock twice in succession.

The BWF rules also say that you should not serve in the wrong direction. If the score is even, you may serve on the right side of a court, while serving from the left side if it's odd. A court beyond the white lines is also prohibited.

To serve a birdie is not only an impressive feat of skill, it is also the most important shot of the match. But if the ball is in the net, you won't be able to hit it.

A birdie, or shuttlecock, is a half-round ball with featherlike material around its bottom. It can only be hit once before it bounces to its opposite side. You can only hit it from the lower end of the birdie. Otherwise, it will come back down.

You should be familiar with a few more service rules. The correct service is the one that the shuttlecock lands on. The same applies to doubles. You will also receive a point for serving in the correct court.

You can also use badminton rules as a guide to determine if a shot is good or not. These rules include the use of the correct racket, a lightweight racquet and being above your waistline while serving.

These are only a few of more than 30 badminton rules you should be aware of when playing. If you do not follow these rules, your opponent may win by a large margin.

Another important rule is that you cannot hit the shuttlecock two times in a row. Ideal birdies should have a round base. You don't need to be perfect but it's a good idea to learn how to return a meal in the right direction.
